Beautiful Portfolios Don’t Get Clients. Here's What Does.

Three Business Principles That Will Help You Get Archviz Clients

August 25, 20257 min read

A UK studio owner's client told him, "You helped me secure £10 million in early funds, and that's due to your visuals and 3D animation."

Six months before this happened, he was sending portfolios and getting ghosted. But what changed was not his rendering skills... it was how he positioned his value. After working with over 300 Archviz studios, here’s what I learned:

Clients don't hire you because your work looks good. They hire you because they believe you can deliver results.

Why do many talented artists struggle to get noticed?

As a fellow Archviz artist, I get it. We exist to create beautiful work, not to chase clients.

You've probably spent years perfecting your craft. Maybe you've even won some awards or gotten featured on design blogs. But here’s the thing: your portfolio looks as good as everybody else’s.

What’s happening in the market right now is as follows:

  • Every studio showcases "award-winning" renders

  • Every artist claims "photorealistic quality"

  • Every website promises "bringing visions to life"

In other words, you're drowning in a sea of beautiful portfolios that…all look the same to clients.

I've sat with 71 Archviz studio owners who also felt this way. They'd tell me:

“My work is as good as anyone's, so why am I not getting clients?”

But the common reason for business growth among all the successful studios out there is that they have better positioning (not better renders).

"Joining Anees' coaching was the best decision I made this year. The method he teaches is truly unique... something I haven’t seen offered anywhere else... and it’s designed to set studios apart."

- Paulo Panseri, founder at Panseri Studio, Brazil

Business Principle #1:

Take consistent action over perfect portfolios

I know the temptation to perfect your portfolio before reaching out to clients. I've been there.

Back when I was running my own studio, I spent months obsessing over every detail of a project. I wanted to match Alex Roman's quality of work (he is the artist behind “The Third and the Seventh”). I was under the impression that clients would reject anything less than perfection.

So when I had a client who wanted 3D animation, I attempted to match Alex Roman's quality of work.

But I failed...

As I worked on the project and spent hours and hours making it perfect, I eventually realized that I can’t be as good as him. Doubt crept in. I began to worry about how the client would react when they saw what I had done. Then I told myself, “Well, this is the best I can do”, then pushed myself to deliver the project.

After delivering my “imperfect” work, surprisingly, the client was happy.

That project taught me a lesson that changed the way I approach my business:

Clients need good work delivered on time, not a masterpiece that took twice as long.

Here's a common scenario that happens in this industry:

One of my clients spent 6 months "perfecting" his website before reaching out to a single prospect. Meanwhile, I had another client who booked 3 discovery calls in his first week of outreach — with a basic portfolio.

The difference:

  • Client #1 waited for perfection.

  • Client #2 focused on clear communication about what he could deliver.

The point?

Your current portfolio is probably good enough to start conversations. Understand that clients care more about your process than your pixels. But you won't realize that until you start taking action.

Because taking action teaches you what clients actually want.

“Before the Health Check call, my biggest challenge was finding clients. During the call, I learned the real market prices for renders and where I had to focus...This call is very fast and practical to see current problems and create a future plan.”- Bora Cebecioglu, Founder at Boce Studio, Spain

Business Principle #2:

Clients buy confidence, not just quality

High-quality renders are the “entry fee” to the game of winning clients. What actually wins projects is understanding your client’s business goals.

One of my coaching clients felt stuck because he kept competing on price. When he interviewed his past clients and got the following feedback:

This feedback gave him the confidence to walk into future meetings and say: I help clients sell 50% of their property off the plan.

A lot of Archviz Studios don’t realize that clients look for someone who:

  1. Understands their deadlines

  2. Explains their process clearly

  3. Demonstrates confidence that the project will be delivered as promised.

It positions you as a strategic partner (not just a service provider).

Business Principle #3:

Professional Outreach Beats Waiting for Referrals

Many ArchViz artists I work with say that outreach feels “too salesy” or desperate.

But most of them don't realize that while you're waiting for referrals, other studios are building relationships with their ideal clients. This is not to say that referrals are ineffective. They're effective but unpredictable.

Professional outreach is less about being pushy and more about genuinely helping prospects understand how you can solve their specific challenges.

Here's what professional outreach looks like:

Instead of saying: “Hi, we do Archviz. Here's our portfolio. Interested?”

You say: “Saw your Tribeca project — the material choices show real attention to detail. I've helped similar developers visualize luxury projects that sold 40% faster. Worth a brief conversation about your upcoming launches?”

It indirectly shows the client that you've done your research because you are offering specific value (not just services).

The message feels more like an invitation to discuss and less like you're pushing for sales.

In addition to that, this approach systematically shows you're serious (about growing a real business), you're building relationships (before you need them) and creating a steady flow of opportunities as opposed to waiting for referrals.

“The tools and guidance I got from Anees were unmatched. One of the biggest benefits was learning to reach out to new contacts.- Mark Duda, co-founder at 3D Avenue, the UK

You're not alone in feeling this way

Most artists don't have a quality problem…

They have a clarity problem:

  • Unclear about who their ideal client really is.

  • Unclear about what makes them different from everyone else.

  • Unclear about how to communicate their value in business terms.

  • Unclear about the next steps they need to take.

The good news?

Once you get clear on these things, everything else becomes much easier.

P.S. I only work with 10 private coaching clients at a time because I believe in giving each person the attention they deserve. If you're serious about building a real business around your Archviz skills, the Health Check Call is where we explore if working together makes sense for both of us.
